Greater Manchester Low Carbon Hub. Delivering Greater Manchester's transition to a low-carbon economy

Case study: Energy management – MediaCityUK

The annual savings from energy measures taken across MediaCityUK since 2012 has now passed £850k.

A major investment at MediaCityUK is our tri-generation scheme, a central, on-site energy source which supplies a low-carbon form of electricity, heating and cooling to the development.

Through this investment, MediaCityUK has avoided the production of 1,722-tonnes CO2e this year alone.

To further build on the success of our carbon emission reductions, MediaCityUK has committed to the roll-out of a Carbon Literacy Programme; a training initiative aimed at tackling the effects of climate change.

Working with Cooler Projects, MediaCityUK and some of its major occupiers including the BBC, ITV and dock10, have developed the training content to target specific areas of carbon emissions across the estate.

Carbon Literacy training provides MediaCityUK staff, service teams and estate tenants with vital knowledge and awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities, as well as the ability and motivation to reduce emissions on an individual, community and organisational basis.

This focused approach to energy management has resulted in a much more active engagement with tenants about energy issues, and efforts were recently recognised at the Carbon Literate Organisation Awards for an outstanding commitment to reducing carbon emissions. It was one of only two companies to take home a Platinum award.
